The University Grants Commission on Wednesday issued a fresh circular directing all central universities and their colleges to use only the Common University Admission Test (CUET) score for admission in under graduate programmes. Some activity based programmes such as Fine Arts have been exempted from CUET.

"In continuation of our earlier letters regarding participation in the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) in all UGC funded Central Universities for admission of the students in UG programmes, it is clarified that all the central universities and their colleges should use only the scores of CUET while admitting the students in UG programmes. However, in some activity-based courses such as Fine Arts/Performing Arts/Sports/ Physical Education etc. additional criteria may be used," reads the circular.

The application procedure for CUET began on Wednesday. The three-and-a-half-hour computer-based test will only have multiple-choice questions based on Class 12 NCERT syllabus. Incorrect answers will get negative marks.

The CUET will have section 1A, section 1B, general test and domain-specific subjects. Section 1A, which will be compulsory, will be in 13 languages and candidates can choose the language of their choice.

The options are English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Section 1B is optional and for students who want to opt for another language apart from the ones that are a part of Section 1A. Some of the languages on offer are French, Arabic and German, he added.

Under the domain-specific subjects, a candidate can choose up to a maximum of six domains that they wish to pursue at the undergraduate level.
