PDP president and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti has accused the Centre of  “weaponising” the pain of Kashmiri Pandits by aggressively promoting the film, The Kashmir Files.

“The manner in which GOI (Government of India) is aggressively promoting Kashmir Files and is weaponising  pain of Kashmiri Pandits makes their ill intention obvious,” Mufti wrote on Twitter.

She further said instead of healing old wounds and creating a conducive atmosphere between the two communities, the Centre is 'deliberately tearing them apart'.

Written and directed by Vivek Agnihotri and produced by Zee Studios, the film depicts the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the valley in the 1990s. It stars Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, Mithun Chakraborty and Pallavi Joshi among others.

Several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Karnataka, Tripura and Goa have exempted the film from entertainment tax.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the movie, saying it has rattled the ecosystem which wanted to bury the truth.

Addressing the BJP parliamentary party meeting, Modi spoke at length about the film and lamented that no attempt has been made till now to make movies depicting the horrors of Partition and Emergency as there have been continuous efforts to "'bury the truth".

''Instead of assessing the film on the basis of facts and truth, a campaign is on to discredit it. The whole ecosystem opposes anyone who tries to show the truth. They only try to project what they want to see as truth, the conspiracy for the last few days is to ensure that no one sees the truth," Modi said.
