Congress Punjab unit chief Navjot Singh Sidhu on Thursday became the first leader of the grand old party to acknowledge the party's defeat in the state assembly polls. The Congress, which won 77 seats in the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections, is staring at a washout. As of 1pm, the Congress was leading in only 17 seats, with a host of prominent leaders, including Sidhu (Amritsar East constituency) and Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi (Chamkaur Sahib and Bhadaur) trailing.
Sidhu tweeted, “The voice of the people is the voice of God…. Humbly accept the mandate of the people of Punjab …. Congratulations to Aap !!!”
Sidhu's frequent tussles with former chief minister Amarinder Singh and, later, Channi had been blamed for eroding the credibility of the Congress in Punjab.
