Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday highlighted the achievements of the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh.

Modi addressed his first virtual rally for the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, titled a 'Jan Chaupal', targeting voters in the districts of Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat, Shamli and Gautam Buddh Nagar.

Modi was quoted by ANI as saying, “Sometimes I hear about the dreams of some people. You all know that only person who sleeps can see dreams. Those who are awake take resolutions. Yogi Ji is a leader who is always awake, and hence, he takes resolutions. This is the difference.” Modi appeared to be taking a jibe at Samajwadi Party chief and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav. Akhilesh had claimed earlier this month that “Lord Sri Krishna comes to my dreams every night to tell me that our [Samajwadi Party] government is coming up.”

Modi highlighted the improvement of law and order under the Yogi Adityanath government. “The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh has taught the meaning of the law to the mafias and goons who used to consider themselves above the law. That is why these goons are desperate to come to power anyhow. We [BJP] are working hard to bring about a change in Uttar Pradesh. On the other hand, they are looking for an opportunity to seek revenge from you (public). Seeking revenge is their ideology.”

Modi alluded to the high incidence of crime under the Akhilesh Yadav government. “Five years ago, there were news of the migration of people every other day. Abduction and demand for ransom had ruined the lives of the middle class and traders. The Yogi government has brought the state out of these situations in the last five years,” Modi said.

Modi alleged, “Five years ago, dabangg (strongmen) and dangai (rioters) used to run the show in UP. Their words were treated as government orders. People of western UP can never forget that when this region was burning in riots, the then government was celebrating... The illegal occupation of the homes, land and shops of the poor, dalits, backwards and the downtrodden was a sign of socialism five years ago.”

According to reports, the BJP had erected LED screens in 21 assembly constituencies in the five districts for the virtual rally, with up to 500 people assembled at each venue.
