Actor-philanthropist Sonu Sood praised Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, calling him "a grounded man" and said he should be given another chance as he got too little time to work.

Sood, while clarifying that he is no associated with any political party but is only supporting his sister Malvika Sood Sachar, who is a Congress candidate from Punjab's Moga, told NDTV on Monday that Channi's work as chief minister for the past three months has been praiseworthy, but "it is very little time for anyone to work."

"It is as if you went to bat and have your eye on the ball but a tea break is suddenly announced. I think he should get to bat after the tea break as well," NDTV quoted Sood as saying.

He also said he had urged the Congress leadership to declare its chief ministerial candidate as it would help voters to identify the leader.

Malvika Sood had joined the Congress a few weeks ago, and the actor said his sister thought it is better for her to join the Congress as the party has been doing a lot of good works in Moga, where his family has been involved in social works.

"My mother, a professor, taught children all her life. My father was a social worker. Schools, colleges and dharamshalas here (Moga) are constructed on our plots of land. So, it is in our blood. My sister took more responsibility, maximum vaccinations in our city were facilitated by her. As far as education and helping people is concerned, she had worked in Moga on a large scale. People pushed her to be a part of the system," Sonu Sood told news agency ANI.

He said he was offered a Rajya Sabh seat twice, but rejected it. "I was offered a Rajya Sabha seat twice and both times said ‘No, thanks’. I was not ready for it. It is not what I want to do. No, don't ask me which party offered it to me. You can make an educated guess."
