As counting of votes in the local body elections in Tripura progressed on Sunday, the ruling BJP has taken a decisive lead. A total of 334 seats are available in the local bodies. Of these, the BJP had won 112 uncontested before the elections were held for the rest.

At noon, the BJP had won 183 of the 334 seats and was leading in nearly 100.

Of the 13 municipalities in the state, the BJP won six and was leading in the remaining councils. The BJP wrested control of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) by winning 26 of 51 seats. The CPI(M) had held control of the AMC for the past three decades.

“The saffron party got 58,821 votes in Agartala Municipal Corporation while Trinamool Congress is in the second position with 22,295 votes and CPI(M) in the third position with 15,960 votes,” Hindustan Times reported.

In the six nagar panchayats, the BJP had won three and was leading in the remaining three.

A total of 334 seats are available in the local bodies. Of these, the BJP had won 112 uncontested before the elections were held for the rest.

The TMC, which had announced grand plans to become the main opposition force in Tripura, was in second position in 50 seats. The TMC won in the Ambasa ward.

The TMC was in second place in five seats of the AMC. East Mojo reported the CPI(M) vote base appeared to have shifted to the TMC.

Welcoming the BJP's performance in Tripura, party national vice president Dilip Ghosh said the saffron party's performance had exposed the “hollowness” of the TMC's claims of making inroads into Tripura.

Ghosh said “The civic poll results are on expected lines. The TMC did not have any chance to open its account in Tripura; they only made noises. This verdict shows hired people from West Bengal cannot help a party create a base in a state, which has faith in the BJP.”

Leader of opposition in West Bengal Suvendu Adhikari tweeted “We are grateful to the people of Tripura for wiping out the corrupt & fascist Tolamool party of Bengal.”
