A junior executive officer of the West Bengal government has decided to quit his job as joint block development officer in Malda and become an assistant teacher of a primary school.

The move is considered surprising because Asish Nayek had a state salary grade of 14 (earning around Rs 1 lakh). In the new job, he would now be drawing Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000.

Last week, the state government relieved him from service and allowed him to join the primary school in Malda.

While Nayek said he would have loved more to serve the children than serving an office that had a heavy “workload”, sources close to him said, “He could not absorb the pressure of the local TMC leaders. Many have even threatened him.”

The sources claimed that he used to raise many objections on many rural projects and contracts given to people who were controversial in character.

It is not known which primary school he would be joining as an assistant teacher.

The West Bengal government notification said, “The governor is pleased to order that Shri Ashish Nayek, Joint Block Development Officer, Bamongola Block, Malda, be released from the service of Joint Block Development Officer on resignation. The order is issued on the basis of the prayer of Shri Nayek for release on resignation to facilitate his going to the post of assistant teacher in primary school of government of West Bengal, subject to making over of charges.”

The notification is signed by Soumyojyoti Dutta, a deputy secretary of the government of West Bengal.

The order got the sanction of the personnel department of the government of West Bengal on Monday.

Copies of the order have been marked to the public service commission, district magistrate of Malda, the Bamangola BDO and district panchayat and rural development officer.

This is the first time in recent history that a government officer who served for about 15 years decided to choose a job with fewer benefits.

If Asish Nayek continued in service, he could have retired as an executive-rank officer of the West Bengal Civil Service.
