The name of Faizabad Junction railway station in Uttar Pradesh was changed to Ayodhya Cantt with immediate effect, the Railways said on Tuesday. The station code will be AYC.

“It is notified for the information of the general public that the name of Faizabad (FD) Railway Station in Lucknow Division of Northern Railway has been changed to Ayodhya Cantt (station code: AYC) with immediate effect,” Northern Railway PRO Dipak Kumar said.

The Uttar Pradesh government had last month announced that the Faizabad station that falls under the Lucknow-Varanasi section would be named after the temple city. The CMO said the Centre had already given its consent for renaming the station.

In 2018, the Yogi Adityanath government had renamed Faizabad district as Ayodhya. In the same year, the state government had sent a request to the Centre to rename the airports in Agra, Bareilly and Kanpur. According to reports, the proposal was to rename the Agra airport after Jan Sangh founder Deen Dayal Upadhyay.

The government has already changed the name of Allahabad to Prayagraj and Mughalsarai railway junction as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay junction.

The sudden spate in changing the names of key UP districts, towns and railway stations drew criticism from not only the opposition but the ruling NDA constituents like the Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP), too.
