Two militants were killed in an encounter with security forces at Dragad in Shopian in Kashmir on Wednesday.

According to police, one of the dead militants was involved in the killing of a migrant carpenter, Shakir, at Litter in Pulwama.

“#Shopian Encounter Update: Killed #terrorist Adil Wani was #involved in #killing of a poor carpenter namely Sakir Ah Wani S/O Gulam Kadir Wani R/O Saharanpur UP. Adil Wani was District Commander Shopian of proscribed #terror outfit LeT(TRF),” Kashmir Police tweeted.

The encounter started after security forces received information about the presence of militants in the area.

A cordon-and-search operation was launched in the village by elements of Police, Army's 44 RR and CRPF, resulting in an encounter.

IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar said 15 militants have been killed in the last two weeks.

Anti-militancy operations have been stepped up after the targeted killings of non-natives and civilians from Kashmiri Pandit and Sikh communities by militants.

The killings had caused panic among non-natives and minority communities. Around 4-5 lakh non-natives come to Kashmir to work in summers annually. A large number has fled Kashmir in the wake of the recent attacks.

The government has been jolted by the killings while the security forces have reinforced vigil and security across Kashmir. Many non-natives have been shifted to safer locations, mostly schools and colleges, by the police.
