In what can be described as yet another 'anti-climax' in the political life of Rajinikanth, the Tamil superstar on Monday announced that his fan association, the Rajini Makkal Mandram, was being dissolved and he would not be entering politics. It will now be called Rajinikanth fan club.

Observers had noted the RMM would serve as the incubator for a possible political party that would have been launched by Rajinikanth. Despite his announcement in December last year that he would not be joining active politics, the RMM remained intact.

The News Minute quoted a statement by Rajinikanth as saying, "I had thought of starting a political party and getting involved in politics. But the timing was such that it was not possible. I have no intention of getting involved in politics in the future, so I kindly inform you that the Rajini Makkal Mandram will function as a fan charity forum for the benefit of the people." Rajinikanth stated the senior functionaries of the RMM would hold their positions.

On Monday morning, comments by Rajinikanth that he would discuss his political future with RMM office-bearers had triggered a buzz on whether the superstar still intended to pursue his political ambitions. Interestingly, he had also said the meeting would decide on the future of the Mandram.

It was in December 2017 that Rajinikanth first announced he was eyeing an entry into active politics. However, subsequent steps were seen as being slow even as the DMK accused him of being close to the BJP.
