Even as the number of COVID-19 patients and deaths due to the pandemic continue to climb in Uttar Pradesh, the Yogi Adityanath government is equipping cow shelters (gaushalas) in the state with oximeters and thermal scanners for cows.

According to an IANS report, the government directed that COVID-19 protocols should be followed at the cow shelters. The government has further directed that help desks be set up at every district in the state for protection of cows.

IANS reports that as many as 700 help desks have been set up across the state for the welfare of cows. The government has also provided 51 oximeters and 341 thermal scanners to ensure better care of the animals during the pandemic.

A government spokesperson told the news agency that a large number of stray cows are provided shelter in these centres and the government is also increasing the number of gaushalas to tackle the stray cow menace.

Earlier, The Wire had reported that owing to cow vigilantism because of which people are unable to sell these animals, cows and bullocks are set free by the farmers when the animals are old and people are unable to afford to feed them. This results in stray cow menace.

In as many as 5,268 cow protection centres in the state, over 5,73,000 cows are provided shelter. Besides, over 4,64,000 cows are kept in 4,529 temporary shelters.

Meanwhile, the state, on Tuesday, breached the 350-mark for daily COVID-19 deaths as 352 patients succumbed to the viral disease. The state reported 25,858 new cases on Tuesday.
