An Indian soldier was martyred as Pakistani troops opened fire and shelled forward posts along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.

"At about 1530 hours today, the Pakistan army initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing with small arms and intense shelling with mortars along the LoC in the Nowshera sector in district Rajouri," the Army said in a statement.

Indian Army retaliated befittingly, it added.

According to the Army, Naib Subedar Ravinder was critically injured in the firing and he later succumbed to his injuries.

This was the first ceasefire violation reported in 2021. In 2020, there were 5,100 instances of ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the LoC, the highest in nearly 18 years. At least 36 people, including 24 security personnel, were killed while more than 130 left injured in Pakistan firing in 2020,

Officials said the "very heavy" shelling and firing by Pakistani troops last year virtually made the 2003 India-Pakistan border truce "redundant".
