Twitter comes to the rescue of Delhi eatery run by 80-year-old couple

The coronavirus had proved to be a huge catastrophe for their small enterprise

80-year-old Kanta Prasad and his wife Badami Devi are the examples of how the coronavirus has hit small businesses. Baba ka Dhabha, a Delhi eatery has been running in losses as people aren’t so keen to eat at a street-side joint during the pandemic. But, a video of the roadside stall, urging people to eat at the joint, has managed to bring a smile to the old couple’s face. 

The elderly couple saw several people queueing up for a home-cooked meals form their kiosk at South Delhi this morning. The duo who start cooking at 6.30 am, have food items for the day ready by 9.30 am. These include rice, dal, curry and parathas that are priced between Rs 30-50. The duo has been running the kiosk for 30 years. In the video shot by blogger Gaurav Vasan, the couple say, they hardly made huge profits, but, the coronavirus proved to be a huge catastrophe for their small enterprise. When asked about their earnings for the days, Kanta Prasad held up a few Rs 10 notes and said that they had earned just Rs 50 through the day, with tears in his eyes. The couple does not get any help from heir children— two sons and a daughter.

Today, as several people lined up near their stall, Kanta Prasad said, “It feels like whole India is with us. Everyone is helping us."

His wife Badami Devi said, “there were no customers, we had to return home with food... Now we are happy, it feels like we've many extended families."

“The power of social media is known today. It was a real pleasure to see happiness on the face of an ordinary person we don't even know today #BabaKaDaba,” on Twitter user wrote. “I hope this will be the everyday crowd in #BabaKaDaba, Not just only for today ThankYou SM & Dilli Walo,” wrote another Twitter user. 

Cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin tweeted, “Let’s not break this mans spirit and fight!! Let’s do our best for him.”
