Bhopal MP Pragya Thakur has been receiving threatening calls from anonymous numbers over the past few days. She filed complaint with the Kamla Nagar police station in Bhopal following which a case has been registered and a probe has begun.

Thakur, who is often in news for her controversial statements and actions, said in her complaint that the anonymous caller abused and made indecent comments.

The MP said the caller had mentioned her recent statements on Ram temple construction and appeal for recitation of ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ to ward off COVID-19 pandemic, while abusing her.

The calls by the MP received showed private or international numbers, and the caller also abused senior BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

Thakur said she got the complaint registered as a legal process, but if the caller dared to reveal himself, she could take care of him.

T.T. Nagar city superintendent of police (CSP) Umesh Tiwari confirmed to THE WEEK that a case had been registered by the Kamla Nagar police station. “The case has been registered under section 507 of IPC (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication) and a probe has been started,” Tiwari said. He, however, refused that there was any mention of any threat to life in the complaint.

In January this year, a doctor from Maharashtra was arrested by the Madhya Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for sending threat letter with a pouch of chemical substance to Pragya Thakur. The MP had received the letter with pouch through mail in October 2019, but opened it only in December 2019, following which she lodged a police complaint.

The accused Syed Abdul Rehman, a homoeopath, was denied bail by the MP High Court last week.
