Uttar Pradesh police have intensified their search for Vikas Dubey and a close watch is being kept on the interstate borders as well as the state’s border with Nepal, to nix any possibility of the gangster’s escape.

Police have also issued posters of 15 associates of Dubey who are believed to have been part of the encounter that left eight policemen dead in the village of Bikru—in the Choubepur suburb of Kanpur district. The encounter took place in the early hours of Friday morning.

Meanwhile, the Lucknow Development Authority has also started to investigate Dubey’s house in the city. Dubey’s house in Bikru village was razed by the police on Saturday. There are unconfirmed reports about the Lucknow house being constructed in violation of norms. If this is found to be true, then this house too is likely to be demolished.

Investigation into the case thus far has revealed that Devendra Mishra, a deputy superintendent of police who lost his life in the encounter, had written a letter about the nexus between the incharge of the Choubepur police station and Dubey. The letter, of which there is no official confirmation as yet, had accused the Choubepur in-charge of striking off serious sections from an FIR filed against Dubey. Barely an hour before the encounter, Dubey is believed to have received a tip-off from the police station.

Laxmi Singh, IG Lucknow, who is now heading the investigation, reached Bilhaur police station—of which Mishra was in-charge—this morning. The computer used by Mishra has been sent for forensic investigation.

All houses in Bikru are being searched. Some locally made bombs were recovered at one of these houses.

Dubey’s close associate Jai Bajpai, who is believed to have taken care of all his financial transactions, has also been picked up from Kanpur for questioning and his house searched.

Dubey, who now has a bounty of Rs 2.5 lakh on him, started his career in crime in 1992 when he killed a Dalit youth. From ransoms and land grabs, he rapidly rose to high-profile murders, including that of his own family members. Close connections with the BJP, SP and BSP ensured that he flourished.
