In a shocking incident in Telangana, a 20-year-old pregnant woman was strangled to death allegedly by her parents after she refused to undergo abortion and drop her decision to marry a youth from another caste.

The alleged case of “honour killing” was reported from Kulukuntla village in Jogulamba Gadwal district.

The woman’s parents Bhaskara Shetty and Veeramma have been arrested and sent to judicial custody. Police said the couple throttled their daughter using a pillow when she was asleep on Sunday night and told villagers that she died of cardiac arrest.

Police had initially filed a case of death under mysterious circumstances but the foul play was suspected after the autopsy revealed that the woman was strangulated.

According to police, the woman, who was studying in a private college in Kurnool, was in love with a classmate, belonging to another caste. Since she was unwell for the last few days, her parents took her to a hospital in Kurnool and the medical examination revealed that she was 13 weeks pregnant.

The woman rejected her parents’ demand to go for an abortion and also insisted that she would marry the youth, prompting the couple to hatch a plan to kill her.
