Tension prevailed on and around the Thayyil beach in Kannur on Wednesday when Saranya, accused of killing her one-and-half-year-old child by throwing him on the rocks near the sea, was brought to the crime spot by police to collect evidence.

The 22-year-old woman, who had strained relations with her husband, was arrested on Tuesday after being questioned for nearly 24 hours. During the interrogation, Saranya confessed to the crime and revealed that she wanted to get rid of the baby in order to live with her lover, according to the police.

Saranya and her husband Pranav were on the brink of divorce.

“I am happy even if she is sentenced to be hanged,” Saranya's father, Valsarajan said. He had fainted when police brought Saranya to his house. Her mother, Reena, along with a few relatives, was also seen heckling her daughter.

Scores of people, including women, thronged the Thayyil beach, when Saranya was brought to the crime spot, prompting cops to hurriedly finish the process and return. She is likely to be produced before a local court in the evening.

“She defamed our village. We will not let her live. We will kill her the same way she killed her son,” said a woman to a local TV channel.

The body of the toddler, who was missing from home since the early hours of Monday, was found on the beach the same day. The incident had taken place when the boy's father had come to see the child after three months.

The body was found between the rocks and relatives had alleged foul play in the death.

"Initially, the mother told us that she left the child near her husband in the night. But later in the evening, she confessed that she took the boy outside the house and threw him among the rocks near the sea in the night," a police officer told news agency PTI.

The post-mortem report also showed that the death was due to an injury to the head.
