Xi to meet Suu Kyi

Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to hold talks with Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi on the second day of his two-day visit to Myanmar.

Business deals were expected to dominate Xi's visit, with emphasis on the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC). A focal point of the corridor is the development of a deep-sea port at Kyaukphyu in Rakhine, at an estimated cost of $1.3 billion, which could give China access to the Indian Ocean via a high-speed rail link from across the border.

Before Xi's visit, Suu Kyi had travelled to Kachin, on the border with China, which is the site for a $3.6 billion dam project. The 6,000MW dam project, backed by China, was stalled in 2011 in an embarrassment for Beijing. Suu Kyi's visit has raised hopes the project could be revived. However, activists are expected to stage protests against the project in Yangon on Saturday.
