BJP leader and Rajya Sabha member Subramanian Swamy on Friday said Jawaharlal Nehru University should be shut for two years and reopened with a new name.

Swamy, who was in Ahmedabad to deliver a lecture at Indus University, told reporters that it was necessary to shut down the university “to clean it up”.

He said once it is reopened, it should be renamed Subhas Chandra Bose University. Swamy was of the opinion that “good students” should be shifted to Delhi University and other universities when the varsity is shut for two years, and students involved in hooliganism should be ousted.

The BJP leader said there are many institutes in the name of Nehru and it is time to name institutes after others.

Describing Bose as a nationalist, Swamy said keeping naming the university after him would have a positive impact on students.

Further, he alleged that terror elements and outside forces were supporting the CAA and NRC protests. Backing CAA, he said that the citizenship law is a right step in correcting “historical wrongs” and should have been brought a long time ago. CAA does not take away citizenship from anyone, it only empowers the religiously persecuted in our neighbouring countries, he added.

Delivering a lecture on 'Who we are, A quest for National Identity', he said taking pride in Hinduism should not be seen as communalism because Hinduism characterises India more than any other idea. According to him, secularism is an alien concept and it was inserted in the Constitution by Indira Gandhi government during “dark era” of Emergency.

He observed that India is the only country which never engaged in religious persecution.

Swamy said Indian culture has treated women better than any other culture.

He said that from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from Junagadh to Dibrugarh all Indians are same and share the same DNA.
