The Jawaharlal Nehru University administration on Thursday formed a five-member panel to look into the attack on students and teachers carried out by an armed mob inside the campus on January 5.

As per a statement issued by the JNU administration, Vice Chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar has set up the committee “to inquire into the whole incident of violence which took place on the campus on January 5”. The statement also said that lapses in security, if any, will be probed as well.

On Sunday, a masked mob armed with iron rods, sticks and hammers had entered the campus and attacked students in the Sabarmati hostel, leaving over 35 people, including JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh, injured.

The five-member panel will be headed by Joint Commissioner of Police Shalini Singh, following orders from Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik. The panel's report on the attack in JNU and measures to be taken to ensure safety of students is expected to be shared with the home ministry soon.
