Amid nation-wide outrage over increasing number of crimes against women, Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy announced on Monday that the state would bring in a new law to ensure speedy trial and punishment in rape cases.

The new will will ensure completion of investigation in one week and get death penalty for the culprits in three weeks.

The bill will be introduced in the state legislative assembly on December 11.

Jagan also announced that special courts would be set up in each district to deal with rape cases.

Meanwhile, the chief minister lauded his Telangana counterpart K. Chandrasekhar Rao and that state police over the killing of four accused in the gang-rape and murder of a veterinarian, in an encounter.

"As a father of two daughters, the incident left me deeply agonized. As a father, how should I react to such incidents? What sort of punishment would give a parent relief? We should think about it,” the chief minister said.

“Hats off to KCR and Telangana police officers," Jagan remarked.

Jagan lamented the “terrible state” of laws in the country. “We brought in the Nirbhaya Act after the incident in New Delhi but even after seven years, the guilty in that case have not been handed over punishment till date," he said.

Four accused in the gangrape and murder of a 25-year-old woman on the outskirts of Hyderabad were killed in a pre-down encounter with police on Friday.
