After his resignation on Tuesday afternoon, Devendra Fadnavis holds the dubious distinction of being the Maharashtra chief minister with the shortest tenure of three days. Fadnavis resigned from his post, only three days after he made a dramatic comeback as the chief minister for a second term with the support of NCP leader Ajit Pawar, who had broken ranks with his parent party to lend support to the BJP.

However, comparing to the national level, Fadnavis has reason to heave a sigh of relief. BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh Jagadambika Pal holds the distinction of being the chief minister with the shortest tenure—just one day. Pal was sworn in as the chief minister on the night of February 21, 1998 after Governor Romesh Bhandari dismissed the Kalyan Singh government. However, in the Supreme Court-mandated floor test Kalyan Singh secured 225 votes while Pal could get only 196 votes.
