The ministry of external affairs on Wednesday morning confirmed plans for the much awaited second 'informal summit' between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Chennai. Modi and Xi will meet for their second informal summit on October 11-12.

Modi and Xi had held their first informal summit at Wuhan in China in April last year. The Wuhan meeting helped signal moves to a rapprochement between Beijing and Delhi, months after the armies of both countries were engaged in a tense standoff over the Doklam plateau in 2017.

In a statement about the upcoming summit at Chennai, the ministry of external affairs noted, "The forthcoming Chennai Informal Summit will provide an opportunity for the two leaders to continue their discussions on overarching issues of bilateral, regional and global importance and to exchange views on deepening India-China Closer Development Partnership."

There had been reports for months that Modi and Xi would meet in the historic tourist town of Mamallapuram near Chennai. THE WEEK had recently reported security restrictions being enforced along the route to Mamallapuram from Chennai.
