Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday urged China and India to join hands to help develop greater cooperation of BRICS countries.

Jinping said Beijing views ties with New Delhi from a strategic, long-term perspective. He said both countries can learn from each other's strengths and achieve shared development.

Xi's visit to India comes on the heels of several high-level exchanges, including the Special Representative dialogue in Beijing between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The meeting is seen as an opportunity to normalize ties that have been under strain after the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020.

While hosting Jinping for bilateral talks, Modi said, "I express my gratitude for the support and cooperation received from China during India's BRICS chairmanship. We now have the opportunity to discuss bilateral cooperation. Once again, a warm welcome to India."

Earlier in the day, addressing the 18th BRICS summit, Jinping said China will work will BRICS members to achieve peace and tranquility in the Middle East and the Gulf region. He urged the leaders to play the "due role" in bringing peace to Middle East and stand on the right side of history.

Xi also called on BRICS countries to oppose the Cold War mentality and violations of other countries' sovereignty and interference in their internal affairs.

It should be noted the Mod and Xi held talks during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China, in August 2025.
