Former captain of Indian women's basketball team, Prashanti Singh, and former Olympian Rahul Singh have launched an initiative to open toilets for transgenders, and the first one will come up in Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
This will be the first toilet for transgenders in Uttar Pradesh.
The Supreme Court had in 2014 ordered to build separate toilets for transgenders. However, such toilets have been so far constructed in a few cities like Mysuru, Bhopal and Nagpur.
According to reports, the Varanasi Sports Federation has offered support to the new project, the survey for which will commence on the National Sports Day on August 29. The construction of these toilets will begin on October 2.
Rahul said a site where maximum number of transgenders can avail the facility will be decided for the project.
