In the wake of PM Narendra Modi's statement against former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, the Congress president Rahul Gandhi hit back. "Modi ji, The battle is over. Your karma awaits you. Projecting your inner beliefs about yourself onto my father won’t protect you. All my love and a huge hug. Rahul," he wrote. Priyanka Gandhi termed the statement an "insult" to the "martyrdom" of her late father. "The people will respond," she tweeted.

During a rally in UP's Pratapgarh, PM Modi had termed Rajiv Gandhi Brashtachari No 1 (Corrupt No 1), in an apparent reference to the Bofors scandal that rocked the former's prime ministership. Modi said Rafale was being raked up as an issue just to destroy his image. Taking a swipe at the prime minister, in Haryana, Gandhi said, "To seek votes, whatever comes to Modi's heart, he utters from the stage without applying the mind". Referring to Modi's statement made from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Rahul said he said that the "elephant was sleeping" before he came to power.

Gandhi said Modi was trying to project as if nothing had happened in the country before the BJP came to power. "Modi said nothing happened in the country before he came to power," he said.
