As election fever grips the nation, the number of leaders courting headlines through controversial statements are multiplying by the day. The latest to join the league is Karnataka BJP's K.S. Eshwarappa. The former Karnataka deputy chief minister said that as long as members from Muslim community do not trust the BJP, the party would not favour candidates from the religion. "We won't give Muslims tickets because you don't believe in us. Believe us and we'll give you tickets and other things," ANI quoted Eshwarappa as saying.

He was addressing members of the Kuruba and minority communities in Koppal. He said that the Congress was using the minority communities only for votes. "The Congress uses you only as vote bank, doesn't give you ticket."

With India entering election mode, communal comments from leaders have become an everyday affair in the country. On Monday, even Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not shy away from making communal remarks as he commented on Congress president Rahul Gandhi's candidature from Wayanad in Kerala.

"The Congress insulted Hindus. People have decided to punish it in the election. Leaders of that party are now scared of contesting from constituencies dominated by majority (Hindu) population. That is why they are forced to take refuge in places where the majority is in a minority," PM Modi said on Monday in Wardha, in apparent reference to Gandhi contesting from Wayanad.

This has led to huge uproar from the Congress with its leaders demanding apology from Modi over his comments.
