Scenes of celebration were witnessed at the Congress headquarters in Delhi on Tuesday as the party looked set to form government in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. Also, there was a likelihood of it unseating the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in Madhya Pradesh.
Congress workers, who arrived at the party office in large numbers, burst crackers and danced to the tune of drum beats to celebrate the party's good show in the crucial assembly elections.
This was in stark contrast to the many elections since Lok Sabha polls of 2014, when the party office would empty out by noon as trends indicated a defeat for the party.
The Congress office was abuzz with activity as party workers carrying the organisation flag crowded the precincts and media persons were present in large numbers to get reactions from party leaders.
"The countdown of the BJP government at the Centre has begun. The election results clearly show that the Congress under the leadership of Rahulji will form the next government at the Centre," said Poonam Sharma, a party worker from East Delhi.
Leaders, however, were cautious in their comments as they waited for the situation to become clear in Madhya Pradesh, where the Congress was locked in a neck-and-neck contest in Madhya Pradesh.
Congress President Rahul Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, when asked for their reaction to the election results, said one should wait for the situation to become more clear.
Rahul is expected to address a press conference at the party headquarters after the Madhya Pradesh verdict gained some finality.
