Four police personnel were suspended in Uttar Pradesh after a video of them harassing and assaulting a woman over her alleged relationship with a Muslim man went viral. The incident reportedly took place in Meerut a few days ago.
The video, apparently shot by one of the cops, shows the woman sitting between a female and male constable in a police vehicle. Two other policemen were seen sitting in the front seat. The cops can be heard asking the woman why she is "dating a Muslim man when there are so many Hindu men around".
The woman constable is seen thrashing the woman and removing the scarf which she used to cover her face.
According to reports, the woman and her Muslim male friend are medical students and were studying together at his house when a group of Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists attacked them, alleging 'love jihad'. The attackers later handed over the duo to police.
Both of them were taken to police station in separate vehicles. The VHP members reportedly asked the girl's father to file a complaint, but he denied.
An NDTV report said the couple continued to be harassed by the right-wing men even after reaching the police station. The report quoted a senior police officer as saying that they had initiated a probe into the incident and further action would be taken based its findings.
