Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is visiting the temple town of Maheshwar on a three-day private tour to the state of Madhya Pradesh. She is a guest of Richard Holkar, the US-born scion of Holkar princely state.

Clinton arrived at Indore on Sunday in a special plane with her team of security personnel. She is staying at the Maheshwar Fort, which was converted into a heritage hotel by the Holkar family. She is likely to visit tourist spots located around Maheshwar, including the picturesque Mandu—home to historical monuments frequented earlier by Mughal rulers, officials said.

Clinton was greeted by Khargone district collector Ashok Kumar Verma and the SP of the district in Maheshwar. Maheshwar, 90 kilometres from Indore, used to be the capital of the erstwhile Holkar kingdom till 1818, after which it was moved to Indore.

Sources in the government said that she is also likely to participate in a function organised by a local voluntary organisation, which works with the Clinton Foundation—the NGO promoted by Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Clinton will leave for Jodhpur on Tuesday and tour Rajasthan as part of her next leg of visits.

The Indore police has made a strict security arrangement for the visit, which is closely guarded by the 16-member security staff of the former US first lady.
