The news of the death of a family of 4 people in Mumbai due to suspected food poisoning has shocked people, with many raising concerns over the tragedy.
As per the preliminary information that is available, Abdullah Dokadia (40), his wife Nasreen Dokadia (35), and their two daughters, Ayesha (16) and Zainab (13), died after a suspected case of food poisoning. They had biryani for dinner and between 1:00 am and 1:30 am, the four family members reportedly consumed watermelon. Within hours, their condition worsened.
By early morning, they experienced severe food poisoning symptoms and were referred to JJ hospital for further treatment. Unfortunately, they passed away during the treatment procedure. According to the police, the exact cause of the suspected food poisoning remains unclear, and an investigation is underway. The exact cause of death will be confirmed only after forensic and postmortem verification are completed.
Watermelon poisoning:
A journal article published in the Oxford Academic mentioned a similar case study of a death caused by watermelon poisoning. "The head of a family (61 years), his wife (59 years), their son (38 years), daughter-in-law (35 years), and two male grandchildren (14 and 11 years respectively) were admitted to the hospital with gastroenteritis. About four hours earlier, they had consumed pieces of freshly cut watermelon," mentioned the article.

Experts mentioned that the stool cultures of all members of the family grew an enteroinvasive variety of Escherichia coli, which was non-motile with non-lactose ferments.
