World Health Day | Why enlarged breasts remain an overlooked men’s health issue

Gynecomastia, or male breast enlargement, is often overlooked due to shame and misunderstanding, but understanding its causes like hormonal shifts is crucial for seeking effective treatment

Male breast enlargement, known as gynecomastia, is often overlooked in men's wellness talks. Seeing it daily through my work as a plastic surgery specialist, many people arrive after long stretches of silence - years spent avoiding help because shame whispers louder than facts.

Misunderstanding plays its part, too; some assume the change belongs to weight gain alone, not realising tissue shifts are at play.

Not every chest enlargement in males comes down to appearance alone. Hormones often play a role - estrogen rising while testosterone stays low shifts the balance. This change might show up when young, stick around past teenage years, or appear later because of medicine, body changes, or health issues hiding beneath. What looks like extra tissue may actually be stored fat - a key difference since treatment paths split sharply at this point.

Most people show up at surgery only after pushing through endless workouts or strict diets - still stuck. Changing daily habits might shrink body fat, yet it leaves behind stubborn gland growth untouched. That mismatch? It builds irritation and slows down real treatment even more.

Underneath gynecomastia sits more than tissue - there's weight in how it makes a person feel. Confidence fades slowly, while being seen feels harder than before. Places like swimming pools turn awkward. So do fitted clothes. These moments pile up without warning. Talk about it? Almost never happens. The quiet grows because people stay silent. When conversations don't start, problems hide longer. Treatment waits, even when needed.

Most people find surgery works well for gynecomastia. Instead of just cutting, today's methods shape the chest by clearing out extra gland tissue and fat through a small incision that is not in the nipple area but hidden in the armpits. Technologies like ultrasonic and power-assisted liposuction help in achieving smooth results close to how a man’s torso naturally appears. Scars tend to fade quietly along skin lines. A trained plastic surgeon can guide this process without major issues. Satisfaction follows, steady and expected, as the scar is well hidden, almost giving it the title of scarless gynecomastia surgery.

Seeing health issues clearly helps men speak up faster. Since gynecomastia affects both physical and emotional well-being, proper healthcare matters. Early evaluation reveals underlying causes, allowing treatment plans to form - over time, balance begins to return. With timely steps, complications fade into the background.
