When Indian stand-up comedian Aishwarya Mohanraj opened up about using Mounjaro as part of her weight-loss journey, it sparked curiosity and conversation around this injectable medication.

What exactly is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is the brand name for tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable drug originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes. However, it has gained widespread attention for its weight-loss effects, leading many to use it for obesity and metabolic health.

The medication works by mimicking two naturally occurring gut hormones—GLP-1 and GIP—that play a key role in regulating appetite, blood sugar, and digestion.

Unlike older weight-loss injections that target a single hormone, Mounjaro’s dual-action mechanism helps people feel fuller for longer, slows gastric emptying, and reduces hunger signals to the brain.

As a result, users often consume fewer calories without the constant mental struggle associated with dieting. Clinical trials have shown significant weight reduction in many participants, sometimes exceeding results seen with earlier GLP-1 medications.

In Aishwarya Mohanraj’s case, her revealing the use of Mounjaro helped destigmatise the use of medical interventions for weight loss. By acknowledging that medical support played a role, she highlighted that weight loss is not always about willpower alone. Hormones, genetics, mental health, and lifestyle all play an important role in it.

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, and fatigue, especially in the early weeks.

Doctors often emphasise that Mounjaro works best when combined with long-term lifestyle changes such as balanced nutrition, strength training, and improved sleep.

Actress Soha Ali Khan, in an official post on her Instagram handle, praised Aishwarya for disclosing the truth about her weight loss journey. “So finally, someone said it. They lost a ton of weight not just by eating right or working out, but by taking Mounjaro. And I think it takes great courage to speak the truth,” said the actor.

She also noted that Ozempic and Mounjaro are not weight loss trends and are meant for certain people as serious medical treatments.
