Flight operator IndiGo, which is facing a serious operational crisis, has left many passengers in a spot over the cancellation or delay of flights. It has been reported that 4,500 flights have been cancelled since last week over this crisis, stranding the passengers in the airports looking for other means to travel.

With many travellers being left helpless in such a dire situation, it also brings to the fore the health emergency that needs to be addressed.

Here are 5 key health concerns to look out for air travellers in such times:

Stay hydrated!

Travellers in such situations should always remember to stay hydrated, as staying long hours in an airport or in a closed cabin can cause dehydration. This could further lead to headaches, dizziness and horrible fatigue, affecting the overall health of an individual.

Here's what travellers can do. Add oral rehydration salts (ORS) or electrolytes if you feel drained and drink plenty of water. Avoid the consumption of alcohol and excess caffeine.

Deep vein thrombosis risk

According to Mayo Clinic, Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of the deep veins in the body, usually in the legs. It can cause leg pain or swelling.

Apart from certain medical conditions, DVT can also be caused if an individual cannot move a lot while travelling or if they do not move for a long time.

People need to ensure that they walk enough or stretch their legs frequently, try some exercises like ankle rotation, calf raises or seek medical help if they notice redness/ swelling.

Manage stress and anxiety

Such unexpected delays and cancellations of flights are bound to make an individual stressed. They can also experience a panic attack due to such situations.

Try to stay calm and practice deep breathing or meditation. Consult a health expert immediately when you notice panic attack signs or elevated blood pressure.

Gastrointestinal troubles

Delays in mealtimes and the quality of food can be a reason to cause acidity or bloating issues. When this happens, passengers should keep in mind to drink warm water or keep their meals light during the stranded period. Avoiding heavy and greasy food can be a good option.

Infectious disease risk

Crowded places can also be a risky platform for exposure to various infectious diseases like flu, COVID-19, etc. Hence, individuals should ensure they wear a mask and follow hygiene protocols to stay safe from such infections.

Apart from these health concerns, passengers should also be mindful about skin & eye dryness, ventilation-related risks and more.

Please seek medical help or consult a health expert for more information.
