The recent deaths of multiple children in Madhya Pradesh following the alleged consumption of cough syrups have sparked a heated debate on the dos and don'ts of medical protocols.
Officials even found high levels of Diethylene Glycol (DEG), a toxic substance, in a cough syrup named 'Coldrif', forcing several states to ban the use and sale of the medicine.
It is a common practice for people to take tablets and medications that are common knowledge to all about curing an illness. However, many misuse it by not visiting a doctor or following the health protocols.
Here are some health safety tips that one needs to follow while consuming a cough syrup:
1. Check the label carefully
Always make it a practice to read the active ingredients and dosage instructions on your pill or syrup.
2. Avoid self-medication
Always consult a doctor, especially for children, the elderly, or pregnant individuals. It can be dangerous to assume what medication can be taken for a condition without an expert opinion.
3. Know your health conditions
People with high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid issues, heart disease, or liver/kidney problems should check with a doctor before use. Some cough syrups might be harmful for people with certain underlying conditions.
4. Be cautious with children
When it comes to cough syrups, please avoid giving them to children unless prescribed by a doctor.
5. Check expiry and storage
Never use cough syrups that are past their expiry date.
6. Watch for side effects
Stop use and seek medical help if you notice rashes, dizziness, breathing difficulty, or vomiting after consuming a medicine.
