What is 'Oxygen Therapy', claimed by entrepreneur Bryan Johnson to cheat ageing?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy heals damaged tissues and also helps in the growth of new skin, blood vessels and connective tissue

American entrepreneur and venture capitalist Bryan Johnson has some news to share about cheating ageing. He claims he had the most effective longevity therapy called the hyperbaric oxygen therapy in which he completed 60 sessions in 90 days and each session is for 90 minutes.

What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT)?

In HBOT, individuals breathe pure oxygen in a space that is enclosed and has higher than normal air pressure.

Through this therapy, damaged tissues are healed and it also helps in the growth of new skin, blood vessels and connective tissue, as per Cleveland Clinic. HBOT is used the the treatment of chronic wounds and other medical conditions.

Lungs function better and absorb more oxygen when a person is kept in an enclosed chamber with pressure that is two to three times more than normal air pressure.

What conditions can HBOT be used to treat?

HBOT can be used in lifesaving treatment where a patient could be suffering from serious trauma, carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression sickness, or if they have air bubbles in blood vessels.

It can also be effective in limb-saving or tissue-saving treatments, where the patient has infections that cause tissue death or any other injury.

As per Mayo Clinic, HBOT is also used to treat brain abscesses, low counts of red blood cells from serious blood loss, sudden hearing loss from an unknown cause and sudden vision loss from blocked blood flow to the retina.

Are there any risks?

Medical practitioners consider HBOT to be a safe procedure with mild complications. However, the risk of complications are more with longer and repeated therapies, as per Mayo Clinic.

Mild complications include ear pain or middle ear injuries, nose bleeds, and cataract formation among others.
