With the launch of the weight loss drug introduced by Eli Lilly, Mounjaro, in India, health experts are exercising caution. Though the drug has shown promising results in clinical trials, with patients experiencing significant weight loss of up to 21.8 kg and improved blood sugar control, doctors have expressed concerns.

Social media is rife with discussions over the drug’s side effects, its effectiveness and how it can be a game-changer in fitness.

Approved by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), the once-a-week Mounjaro injection is priced at ₹4,375 for a 5 mg and ₹ 3,500 for a 2.5 mg vial.

Moujaro’s affordability, potential side effects, and the need for proper medical supervision have raised concerns among many.

Recently, Gastroenterologist Dr Pal Manickam on his Instagram page shared the side effects and his concerns about the drug.

"Mounjaro is originally meant for diabetes but also helps with weight loss by reducing hunger and improving sugar control...It essentially paralyses the stomach so it does not contract and food stays in the stomach for a longer time making you feel full and not hungry," he said in a video post.

The side effects of the injection:

Nausea

Abdominal pain

Abdominal discomfort

Bloating

Feeling full after eating

Dr Manickam has stressed that Mounjaro is not a magic drug.

Dr Joseph K., an endocrinologist based in Bengaluru, cautioned against the use of Mounjaro, especially among non-diabetic patients. “These drugs offer solutions that are short-lived. Lifestyle interventions are key in coping with diabetes and weight loss. It is always advisd to consult your doctor before taking any such drug,” he said.

Many health experts have urged non-diabetic patients not to consume Mounjaro solely for weight loss unless prescribed by a doctor.
