As one age, maintaining mobility is crucial for overall health and independence. However, one may face several challenges in staying physically active and keeping their body moving. Former bodybuilder and renowned actor Arnold Schwarzenegger (77 years) recently shared his views on the importance of staying active.
“If you rest, you will rust,” said Schwarzenegger during his interview with Healthline.
The actor has joined hands with the medical technology company Zimmer Biomet, which helps people struggling to move. He said that rather than being afraid, seek the help of a health professional if you are struggling with mobility issues.
A campaign was launched by Zimmer with Schwarzenegger as its chief movement officer inviting people living with limited mobility due to hip, knee, shoulder, or other joint pain to share their stories.
“It’s important to take joint pain — either hip, knee, or shoulder — seriously because it decreases the quality of life of millions of people,” said Schwarzenegger.
Importance of mobility
Regular physical activity, such as walking, stretching, and strengthening exercises helps to prevent age-related declines in muscle mass, bone density, and flexibility.
Mobility also plays a crucial role in preventing falls, managing chronic conditions like diabetes and arthritis, and even reducing the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. By making mobility a priority, older adults can maintain their functional ability, stay engaged in activities they enjoy, and live a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Schwarzenegger in his recent interview spoke about his battle with joint pain and how he prefers to keep moving. Consistency and having a routine are important, he said.
If you stop moving, you increase your risk of various health conditions, including osteoarthritis. “However, inactivity is also a symptom of osteoarthritis, as joint pain and stiffness make movement difficult. As a result, many individuals with osteoarthritis are already inactive, and their pain further prevents them from staying active. This creates a vicious cycle,” explained the actor.
Whether it's walking, a 45-minute gym workout, or cycling, the key is to keep moving, the actor said.
He also emphasised the importance of staying active, sharing that he maintains a daily routine of cycling and 45-minute gym workouts, along with skiing every winter. He reflects on how his lifelong commitment to fitness has benefited him as he ages, noting that the strong foundation he built has helped protect his mobility compared to others his age.
