Apple TV’s ambitious science-fiction series "Foundation" is preparing to return for its fourth season, with filming reportedly completed on July 11, 2026, following an extensive seven-month production. The 10-episode season is expected to premiere in mid-to-late 2027. Filming took place entirely in the Czech Republic, with Prague serving as the main production base.

Given the show's large-scale settings, complex storytelling and extensive visual effects, Season 4 is expected to require a lengthy post-production period. The new season will also bring changes behind the camera while continuing the story of humanity's struggle to survive the fall of a vast Galactic Empire.

Notably, Season 4 changed the show's creative leadership. Ian Goldberg, known for "Fear the Walking Dead", and David Kob have taken over as co-showrunners. Series co-creator David S. Goyer has stepped back from the main day-to-day creative role but remains involved as an executive producer.

The new leadership is expected to follow Goyer's long-term story plan, ensuring the series maintains faithful narrative continuity while bringing a fresh creative approach to the upcoming season.

Season 4 is expected to draw heavily from Isaac Asimov's 1953 novel "Second Foundation". The story will continue shortly after the dramatic events of the third-season finale, without a major jump forward in time.

The biggest threat this time will be the Mule, a powerful psychic mutant who can influence people's minds and control their actions. Unlike the dangers Hari Seldon predicted through psychohistory, the Mule represents an unpredictable force that could completely change humanity's future.

Hari Seldon, Gaal Dornick and members of the Second Foundation will face a difficult challenge as they try to protect the Seldon Plan. With the Galactic Empire continuing to collapse, their mission becomes even more urgent. Another major storyline will build on the shocking Season 3 revelation around the character Bayta. This is a significant departure from Asimov's original books.

Who are the returning cast members?

Although Apple TV+ has not yet announced a complete cast list, several familiar faces are expected to return. These include Jared Harris as Hari Seldon, Lou Llobell as Gaal Dornick, Laura Birn as Demerzel, Cassian Bilton as Brother Dawn and Lee Pace as Cleon and the Empire. Pace's continued involvement is possible through the genetic dynasty and flashbacks, despite the death of his particular clone.

How the series differs from the books

One of the most interesting aspects of "Foundation" is how freely it adapts Asimov's original work. The books cover approximately 400 years, with different generations of characters appearing as time passes. The Foundation itself, rather than any individual character, is the central focus.

The television series, however, takes a different approach. To help viewers build emotional connections, it uses recurring characters and narrative devices that allow familiar actors to remain part of the story across centuries. This makes the show less of a direct adaptation and more of a reimagining.
