Netflix recently confirmed that the mystery-thriller "The Beast in Me" will no longer be a limited series and will return for Season 2, bringing back Claire Danes as author Aggie Wiggs and introducing Emmy-winning actor John Goodman as a major new character — Aggie’s father. Jack is described as a long-time con artist, suggesting that his troubled past could bring new challenges into Aggie’s life.

Behind the scenes, Howard Gordon will continue to serve as co-showrunner alongside Daniel Pearle. Gordon has also signed a new exclusive creative partnership with Netflix.

The streamer has not yet revealed the full storyline and release date. The writers’ room opened earlier in 2026, and development is underway.

Gordon has previously expressed strong interest in exploring Aggie’s relationship with her father. The second season is expected to focus on their complicated family history while introducing a new mystery for Aggie to investigate. Danes will also continue as an executive producer. Her character is expected to remain at the centre of the new season.

Originally planned as a limited series, the show's strong audience response and awards success have paved the way for a continuation. It attracted 43 million views in its first seven weeks and received 21 Emmy nominations. Matthew Rhys also earned major recognition for his performance, helping establish the series as one of Netflix’s notable thriller releases.

The first season follows Aggie Wiggs, a successful author whose life changes after the tragic death of her young son. Struggling with grief and unable to write, she has withdrawn from public life. Her world takes a dramatic turn when Nile Jarvis, a wealthy real estate businessman played by Matthew Rhys, moves in next door. Nile has a troubling past. He was investigated as a suspect in the disappearance of his wife, Madison, but was never charged with the crime.

Curious about her mysterious neighbour, Aggie begins investigating his past, hoping to find a subject for her next book. However, her interest soon becomes a dangerous obsession. As she uncovers disturbing secrets, their relationship develops into a tense psychological battle in which it becomes increasingly difficult to tell who is hunting whom.

Considering the intense climactic events of the first season, Matthew Rhys will not return as Nile Jarvis.

Spoiler alert: What happens in the ending of Season 1?

The first season reveals that Nile murdered his wife. His violence continues as he kills a private investigator and an FBI agent while trying to protect his secrets. Eventually, his pregnant wife secretly records his confession and hands it over to the FBI. Nile is arrested and convicted, but he is later killed in prison, bringing his story to a violent end.
