"Jailer 2" has set a new benchmark for Tamil cinema at the international box office. By its eighth day in theatres, the Rajinikanth-starrer earned another ₹5 crore overseas, taking its total international gross to an impressive ₹214.50 crore, per data tracked by Sacnilk. The film has already surpassed the lifetime overseas earnings of several major Tamil blockbusters, making it one of the biggest international successes in the industry’s history.
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the sequel has benefited from Rajinikanth’s immense popularity, strong audience interest and high expectations following the success of the first "Jailer". Released in 2023, it finished its overseas run with approximately ₹196 crore. Its successor crossed that figure within just seven days, reaching around ₹210 crore before adding another ₹5 crore on Day 8.
"Jailer 2" has also outperformed Vijay’s "Leo", which collected approximately ₹204 crore overseas during its lifetime run in 2023. It has also surpassed the lifetime overseas collection of Vijay's "The Greatest of All Time", which earned between ₹158.25 crore and ₹160.25 crore overseas, Mani Ratnam's "Ponniyin Selvan: Part I", with around ₹130 crore, and Rajinikanth's "Vettaiyan", which collected approximately ₹82 crore.
However, if we factor in a wider, multilingual release, including a major Hindi version, one may include Shankar’s "2.0" in higher overseas earnings. Released in 2018, it remains an important point of comparison, with reported overseas earnings of around ₹341 crore. This makes it different from a Tamil-origin film released primarily within the Tamil cinema market.
Another factor behind the strong performance of "Jailer 2" is its early booking response. Trade reports indicated that overseas pre-sales crossed $1 million before the film’s opening day. Some industry tracking estimates suggest that the film reached its overseas break-even point within its first week, although this depends on distribution costs and financial agreements.
Meanwhile, "Jailer 2" has already entered the ₹600 crore club worldwide after its first week, with domestic net figures reaching ₹334.35 crore and domestic gross currently standing at ₹391.55 crore
