HBO’s "True Detective" is preparing to return with a new season, bringing together two major Hollywood stars, Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas. The fifth season of the popular crime anthology series is expected to offer a fresh mystery, a new setting, and the dark atmosphere that has made the show famous.

According to the official press announcement, Cage will play Detective Henry Logan, while Banderas will portray Rai García. The upcoming season will mark the first time the two actors have appeared together on screen, making their pairing one of the season's most exciting features.

Production on "True Detective" Season 5 is scheduled to begin in 2027. As a result, the new season could premiere in late 2027 or sometime in 2028, although HBO has not confirmed an official release date.

Issa López will return as the showrunner, writer, and director. She led the fourth season, "True Detective: Night Country", starring Jodie Foster, which received significant attention from viewers and critics.

Unlike the fourth season, which took place in the cold and isolated landscapes of Alaska, Season 5 will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York. The location change is expected to bring in a different atmosphere to the series while keeping its focus on crime, mystery, and troubled characters.

However, López has indicated that the new season will exist in the same fictional universe as "Night Country". This means viewers can expect a combination of realistic detective work, dark storytelling, and possible supernatural elements. Her use of magical realism, which blends ordinary life with strange or unexplained events, may also continue.

However, specific details about the plot remain limited. It is not yet clear what case the detectives will investigate or how their characters will work together.

Both Cage and Banderas have enjoyed long and varied careers in Hollywood. Cage became widely known for action films such as "The Rock", "Con Air", and "Face/Off". He also earned an Academy Award for his performance in "Leaving Las Vegas". In later years, he gained attention for unusual and independent films such as "Mandy" and "Pig".

Banderas, meanwhile, built his reputation through films such as "Desperado" and "The Mask of Zorro". He also received critical praise for his performance in Pedro Almodóvar's "Pain and Glory".

Their different acting styles could bring an interesting dynamic to the new season.

The "True Detective" series has, throughout its run, experienced varying levels of critical and audience reception. The first season, released in 2014, became famous for its philosophical dialogue, unsettling atmosphere, and the performances of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. The second season was criticised for its complicated story, while the third was welcomed by many viewers as a return to the show's slow-building mysteries. Released in 2024, "Night Country" became the franchise's most-watched season, although its supernatural elements and connections to the first season divided audiences.
