Netflix’s political drama "The Diplomat" returns with its fourth season on Thursday, October 15, 2026. The new season will feature eight episodes, all released on the same day, allowing viewers to watch the entire story at their own pace. Following the dramatic events of Season 3, the upcoming season promises more political tension, international conflict and difficult personal choices.
Season 4 will focus on a growing crisis that threatens relations between the United States and the United Kingdom. A secret plan involving US President Grace Penn and newly appointed Vice President Hal Wyler to steal a powerful Russian nuclear weapon pushes the two countries towards the possibility of war.
The situation becomes increasingly dangerous as the plan threatens international security and puts countless lives at risk. As trust between political leaders breaks down, the balance of global power hangs in the balance.
US Ambassador Kate Wyler finds herself caught in the middle of the crisis. Concerned about the consequences of the secret operation, she forms an unlikely partnership with Todd Penn, Grace Penn’s husband. Together, they attempt to challenge their spouses’ decisions and prevent the situation from spiralling out of control. Their uneasy alliance is expected to heighten tensions.
Keri Russell will return as Kate Wyler, alongside Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler. Other returning main cast members include David Gyasi as Austin Dennison, Ali Ahn as Eidra Park, Rory Kinnear as Nicol Trowbridge and Ato Essandoh as Stuart Hayford.
Allison Janney, who plays President Grace Penn, and Bradley Whitford, who portrays Todd Penn, have been promoted to series regulars. Nana Mensah, who plays Billie Appiah, will also continue as a series regular. Their expanded roles suggest that these characters will remain important to the unfolding political drama.
Guest stars Miguel Sandoval, Penny Downie, Pearl Mackie and Georgie Henley are also expected to return.
However, the new season will see the departure of two familiar characters. Celia Imrie, who played Margaret “Meg” Roylin, and Michael McKean, who portrayed President Rayburn, are leaving the series following their characters’ deaths.
Season 4 expands the show’s production across the Atlantic. London remains a key filming location, with historic properties and government landmarks around Westminster and Greenwich helping create the series’ diplomatic setting.
Production also moved to Washington, D.C., and New York to film scenes involving the White House and other executive offices. The use of locations across the United States and England reflects the growing international scale of the story.
