So, if you, like me, have either started watching "Mirzapur" (on Prime Video) just recently or haven't watched any episodes yet but are curious about the movie and want to find out whether you need to see all the seasons of the series first, here's something that could make you feel better: You don't need to watch ALL the seasons. In fact, you don't even have to watch ALL the episodes of even the first season. For those not yet familiar with the series, this article avoids spoilers.
The timeline explained
"Mirzapur: The Movie" serves as a prequel and companion piece to the ongoing series, with a narrative set in 2018, occurring exactly between Episode 6 and Episode 7 of Season 1.
Since this film acts as a "segue" during this window of the first season, some of the characters who are killed later are revived for the movie — with one casting change, of course (Jitendar Kumar replacing Vikrant Massey, due to the latter’s amicable creative differences with the team).
"Mirzapur: The Movie" is set right after Episode 6. It explores an untold, standalone chapter within the 2018 timeline. The idea is to deeply explore the complex, violent dynamics between the fathers and sons of Purvanchal before the major casualties of the Season 1 finale.
Actor Ali Fazal explicitly clarified that the film is a different story meant to expand the world of Purvanchal rather than serve as a direct continuation of the series. It has been intentionally written to be enjoyed by both die-hard fans and first-time theatrical viewers without requiring complex homework.
Simply put, the events of this three-hour-plus movie occur right before Episodes 7–9 of the series.
Why was this chapter not included in the series?
The plot reportedly required a significantly larger budget and visual scale than what was normally fit in a standard-length TV episode. As the trailer has already made it clear, the movie comprises an action-heavy, high-stakes standalone story filled with large-scale explosions and desert vehicle chases.
Backed by Excel Entertainment and Amazon MGM Studios, the film will hit theatres on 4 September 2026. Naturally, it's strictly for adults. That's what the 'A' certificate is for. The official runtime is 3 hours and 17 minutes.
