Actress Hayden Panettiere has passed away unexpectedly at the age of 36.
Her father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed her sudden passing in a family statement released on Sunday, August 16, 2026.
Official reports from family or law enforcement officials don't mention specific health or medical details surrounding her death. However, a new update reported by TMZ says law enforcement sources have confirmed that police responded to an incident involving her on Sunday, and an open investigation is currently underway.
Hayden was only a week away from her 37th birthday. Her father described her as "an incredible light and a force of nature" while requesting privacy for the family.
Hayden’s has been popular for her work in long-running television dramas and massive film franchises, the most notable being her legendary role as Claire Bennet on the sci-fi hit series "Heroes", which ran from 2006 to 2010. Her character's iconic tagline, "Save the cheerleader, save the world," became a defining pop-culture phenomenon of the late 2000s.
Further critical acclaim and two Golden Globe nominations followed for her performance in the musical drama "Nashville" (2012–2018).
Hayden gained initial fame as a child actor playing Sarah Roberts on "One Life to Live" and "Lizzie Spaulding on Guiding Light". She also appeared in the final season of "Ally McBeal" (2002) as Maddie Harrington, the long-lost daughter of the title character.
Hayden had one child, a daughter named Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, born on December 9, 2014. Hayden shared Kaya with her former fiancé, the retired Ukrainian world heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.
Hayden's younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, an actor and artist, also met an untimely demise on February 19, 2023, at the age of 28. He passed away due to cardiomegaly (an enlarged heart) coupled with aortic valve complications. At the time, his family noted, in an official statement, that the underlying heart condition had been undiagnosed. Hayden was close to her brother, later describing his sudden passing as losing "half of my soul."
She had recently returned to public life following the May 2026 release of her memoir, ‘This Is Me: A Reckoning’.
