“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has opened with its highest opening day ever for a movie in Hollywood. According to Sacnilk, the film made a net of Rs 60.60 crore, grossing Rs 72.44 crore on Thursday, July 30.
The movie jumped past two record-breaking Hollywood films: “Avengers: Endgame” (Rs 53.60 crore net in 2019) and “Avatar: The Way of Water” (Rs 40.30 crore net in 2022). It has also beaten Bollywood hits “Pathaan” (Rs 57 Crore) and “Dhurandhar” (Rs 28.60 Crore) in their opening day performances, but is behind “Animal” (Rs 76.10 Crore) and “KGF 2” (Rs 116 Crore), as per Sacnilk.
The occupancy rate was on average 56.58 per cent (51.22 per cent in the morning, 56.57 per cent in the afternoon, 58.78 per cent in the evening, and 65.11 per cent at night), consistently. More than 17,250 shows were played across the country.
Based on the data from Sacnilk, the collections by language showed that English shows led with Rs 32.25 crore, with close to 8,000 shows, and Hindi shows had the highest occupancy of 95% with collections of Rs 22 crore. The collections were followed by Telugu (Rs 3.25 crore), Tamil (Rs 3 crore), Malayalam (Rs 0.07 crore) and Kannada (Rs 0.03 crore).
Before its release in the United States on July 31, the film has been estimated to have grossed more than Rs 1,000 crore globally. If it continues on its trajectory, then “Brand New Day” could soon become the top-grossing Hollywood production in India after “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Avengers: Endgame”.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is the 38th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is Destin Daniel Cretton's first movie in the franchise, replacing Jon Watts, who had directed “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017), “Far From Home” (2019) and “No Way Home” (2021) along with Ted Melfi and Jonathan Levine. Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Florence Pugh, and Mark Ruffalo are featured in the film.
