With the Hulk, the Punisher, Tombstone, and Scorpion in the mix of things, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is promising a field day for Marvel Comics fanatics. Speculations are rife that Jean Grey or other mutants could also be central to the plot, given the repeated use of the term by Tom Holland's Peter Parker.
However, ever since we saw Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland star together in Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans are now daring to dream bigger, with the possibility of the Spider-Verse saga's protagonists being granted an entry into the live-action MCU. But what has Spider-Man: Brand New Day done to fuel these theories? From the trailer, lonely Peter Parker's world seems to be revolving around crime-fighting and missing his best friend and lover. So what exactly happened?
Is Sony planning something big for the Spider-Verse?
In the trailer of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we get to see Peter stalking Ned and MJ. On the phone screen, we get to see Ned's Insta ID, which is "THEGRATEFULNED42". MCU fans should know that the home reality of Miles G. Morales, a.k.a. Prowler, in the 2023 animated release Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is Earth-42.
Morales is also expected to be part of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is set to release next year. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has already declared that the possibility of Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy joining the live-action arena is perhaps possible after Beyond the Spider-Verse is released. Feige reportedly added that Sony are on board with this plan.
So, if Miles and Gwen are to make an MCU entry after the movie, there need to be some stepping stones. After all, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is only a year away, and if their entry happens, it should be in tune with the plans for Avengers: Secret Wars. Many others think a fifth Tom Holland Spider-Man movie could include Miles Morales and Gwen in important roles. Peter Parker may get to do what Tony Stark did for him — mentoring the two teenagers while they approach adulthood with bigger responsibilities to attend to. This is the most thrilling theory of them all, many fans believe.
On his part, Tom Holland didn't hold back either, claiming in an interview earlier this year that he would love to be part of it. “For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter,” Holland told Empire. “Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset.”
Picking up the clues
But before that, the duo could be introduced to the live-action projects in Avengers: Secret Wars as heroes from Earth-42.
It is also noteworthy that Across the Spider-Verse had a cameo by Donald Glover as the Prowler from some universe, while the actor continues to be Aaron Davis in the live-action world, who is the uncle of Miles Morales! So the teenager's existence in Peter Parker's New York is already established, with Davis saying, "I got a nephew who lives here," in Spider-Man: Homecoming. He then talks to Miles over the phone in a parking lot.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to officially hit theatres worldwide this Friday, July 31, 2026.
