'Children of Blood and Bone' movie trailer drops: A look into debates and controversies surrounding the film

Paramount Pictures has unveiled the long-awaited first trailer of Children of Blood and Bone, the adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi's bestselling fantasy novel. The trailer transports viewers to the mythical kingdom of Orïsha through sweeping visuals, magical creatures and large-scale action. The film follows Zélie Adebola, a young warrior determined to bring magic back to her people after it is wiped out by a ruthless king.

The trailer opens with Lashana Lynch as Jumoke, Zélie's mother, before unfolding into a world of prophecy, resistance and conflict.

Based on Adeyemi's bestselling 2018 novel, Children of Blood and Bone is the first instalment in the Legacy of Orïsha trilogy and a favourite among BookTok readers. The adaptation is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who co-wrote the screenplay with Adeyemi. The ensemble cast includes Amandla Stenberg, Thuso Mbedu, Tosin Cole, Damson Idris, Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch, Regina King, Idris Elba, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Viola Davis.

The film, with production design by Black Panther's Hannah Beachler, is set to arrive in cinemas on January 15, 2027.

Why the adaptation sparked debate?

Long before the trailer was released, Children of Blood and Bone had become the subject of conversations around colourism, representation and casting.

When Paramount announced the cast in 2025, many readers welcomed the predominantly Black ensemble. At the same time, the casting of Amandla Stenberg as Princess Amari reignited debate among fans. In the novel, Amari is described as having "dark copper skin", a physical characteristic that many readers believed was integral to her identity. Critics argued that casting the lighter-skinned, biracial actor weakened that aspect of the character.

Other readers questioned why relatively few Nigerian actors had been cast in a story so deeply inspired by Nigerian history, Yoruba spirituality and pre-colonial West African cultures. The discussion played out across Reddit, X and BookTok, where fans debated what authenticity should look like in adapting a novel so closely rooted in Nigerian identity. Stenberg later said Adeyemi had personally encouraged her to take the role and acknowledged why readers felt protective of the books.

Author distances herself from the film

The conversation took a dramatic turn earlier this month when Adeyemi publicly announced that she was distancing herself from the adaptation.

"There is a reason I will not post anything about the adaptation of my work," the Nigerian-American author wrote in messages later shared on TikTok. She later added, "I have not seen the film, and I will not watch it."

Adeyemi, who is credited as an executive producer and co-writer of the screenplay, said she had "tried everything" behind the scenes before deciding to step away, describing the experience as emotionally painful. She encouraged readers who wanted to support her directly to buy the books from independent bookstores.

The posts also included screenshots of messages she allegedly sent to Amandla Stenberg, asking the actor not to contact her or mention her publicly before blocking her. The exchange fuelled further speculation about what had unfolded behind the scenes, though Adeyemi has not elaborated beyond saying she was "attacked behind the scenes."

Neither Paramount Pictures nor Prince-Bythewood has publicly responded to Adeyemi's remarks. As the film heads towards its January 15, 2027 release, the trailer has renewed excitement for the fantasy epic, even as questions surrounding its adaptation continue to linger.
