After doing over Rs 20 crore in daily business in its extended 4-day opening weekend, Vijay's "Jana Nayagan" saw a sharp drop of 68.3% on Monday, with the earnings dropping to Rs 10.15 crore, as noted by box office tracking portal Sacnilk. The India total gross now stands at Rs 157.74 crore and India total net, Rs 134.90 crore. Combined with Rs 4 crore overseas, the worldwide total officially crossed the 200 crore mark (Rs 233.24 crore).
This first Monday drop is natural for many big-budget Tamil and Indian action dramas that enjoyed explosive opening weekends, but mixed reviews led to declining audience interest. Moreover, the leak of "Jana Nayagan" earlier also seems to have affected the overall collections.
The H. Vinoth directorial is massively underperforming when compared to the actor-turned-CM's previous hits like "Leo" and "THE GOAT". The former had easily cleared around Rs 400 crore in the first five days, while the latter crossed Rs 280 crore in the same period.
However, "Jana Nayagan" is faring better at the box office than "Beast" (Vijay's film with Nelson Dilipkumar). In fact, the former has already beaten "Beast" by surpassing the latter's entire lifetime gross in just five days. "Jana Nayagan" also overtook Vijay's "Varisu", which made an estimated Rs 210 cr in its first week. The other Vijay film that crossed Rs 200 crore worldwide in the opening weekend was "Bigil".
Also starring Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, and Prakash Raj, "Jana Nayagan" is currently H.Vinoth's highest-grosser, earning more than his two collaborations with Ajith ("Thunivu", "Valimai"). Vijay had declared it was his final film before stepping into full-time political duties as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister.
