David Jonsson inherits 'Black Panther' mantle, Ryan Coogler returns to direct

Marvel Studios has officially announced that English actor David Jonsson will become the new Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The surprise reveal was made by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and director Ryan Coogler during the Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026.

Jonsson will play T'Challa II, also known as Toussaint, the grown-up son of the late King T'Challa, who was originally portrayed by Chadwick Boseman. In the new film, he will inherit the Black Panther mantle from Shuri, played by Letitia Wright.

Jonsson will make his debut as the iconic superhero in Black Panther 3, which is scheduled to be released in cinemas on 15 December 2028. Ryan Coogler will return to write and direct the film, continuing the story he began with the first two Black Panther movies. The film will also be shot on large-format 70mm film, giving it a cinematic visual style.

The 32-year-old actor has earned praise for his performances in Industry, Rye Lane, Alien: Romulus, and The Long Walk. His casting marks another major step in a career that has quickly gained international attention.

Black Panther 3 is expected to play an important role in the future of the MCU. Releasing during Marvel's Phase 7, the film will take place after the events of Avengers: Secret Wars and is expected to explore the changes left behind by that story. Reports also suggest that Coogler plans to introduce mutants to Wakanda, creating a direct link to Marvel's expanding X-Men storyline.

The film will also build on the wider Wakandan universe that Coogler has helped create through Disney+ series such as Ironheart and Eyes of Wakanda. Together, these projects continue to expand the world of Wakanda beyond the big screen.

With David Jonsson stepping into the role of Black Panther, Marvel is beginning a new chapter for one of its most important heroes.
